BS 7671 Amendment 4:2026 and your commercial EICR
Our team is prepared for Amendment 4 inspection and reporting, helping Norfolk and East Anglia building managers plan their electrical compliance programmes.
The reference edition: BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 was published on 15 April 2026. The preceding BS 7671:2018+A2:2022+A3:2024 version is withdrawn on 15 October 2026; EICRs from that date use Amendment 4.
What matters for your premises: changes cover energy-storage batteries, ICT functional earthing, Power over Ethernet and medical locations. Their relevance depends on the site's equipment and use. Share previous reports, circuit schedules, alterations, critical systems and permitted isolation times so the inspection scope can be agreed.
Condition comes first: an older installation does not become unsafe simply because a new amendment is published. The EICR considers continued safe use within its stated scope and limitations. Findings and actual risks inform the next steps.
Read the correct report format: Amendment 4 separates C1/C2 observations, which make the overall assessment unsatisfactory, from advisory C3/FI observations. Further investigation should still be considered; compare earlier reports using the amendment recorded on each.

Is fixed-wire testing the same as an EICR?+
Fixed-wire testing is commonly used to describe inspection and testing of a building's fixed electrical installation; the resulting condition report is an EICR.

Does Amendment 4 mean an older installation automatically fails?+
No. An earlier installation is assessed for continued safe use within the recorded scope and limitations. The publication of a newer standard alone does not make it unsafe or require wholesale replacement.
How does FI affect an Amendment 4 EICR?+
In the Amendment 4 report, C1 and C2 findings make the assessment unsatisfactory. C3 and FI are advisory and do not themselves change the overall assessment. Further investigation still needs due consideration; the report's amendment must be clear.
